Car Fire Extinguishers
Car fire extinguishers ideally need to be compact in size and lightweight so that they take up little space and they are easy to handle in the event of an emergency. The main car fire risks are from petrol (class B) and gas (class C).
Powder fire extinguishers are designed to tackle the majority of common fires including class A (solid combustibles), class B (flammable liquids), class C (burning gases) and electrical equipment. They are available in 1kg and 2kg sizes, allowing them to be installed without taking up much room. Due to the size of the extinguishers, the brackets supplied with them are different from the standard J and lug wall mounting brackets. The wire brackets are designed so that the cylinder effectively sits in the bracket, allowing the extinguisher to fit securely without movement during transit.
Although without a class C (burning gas) fire rating, foam fire extinguishers are better suited than powder for use in confined spaces. Foam extinguishers are suitable for use on solid combustible and flammable liquid fires and so should a fire started from inside the car, a foam extinguisher could be used.
The 2kg powder fire extinguisher is lightweight and supplied with a bracket and quick release strap. Able to tackle class A, B and C type fires as well as electrical equipment, the powder fire extinguisher is also known as the multi-purpose extinguisher.
