Reception Fire Extinguishers
In receptions, electrical appliances such as computers, advertising/notice monitors and drinks machines are common. CO2 (carbon dioxide) fire extinguishers are required to tackle fires fuelled by electrical equipment as they leave no residue and do not cause damage to other equipment not affected by fire.
However, furniture, textile and paper fires cannot be tackled using a CO2 fire extinguisher. These ignition sources are class A type fires and are covered by water fire extinguishers. Water cools the fire and also leaves no residue. As the majority of persons within the reception area may not have had previous fire extinguisher training, it is likely that a water extinguisher may be used on electrical equipment during a panic situation. It is because of this that a water with additive fire extinguisher that has passed the 35kV electrical conductivity test would be the ideal partner to the CO2 extinguisher. By passing the electrical conductivity test, this means that the user is safe from electrocution if the water is accidentally sprayed on an electrical item. If the extinguishers are installed in a reception area where the occupants have been previously trained (i.e. not members of the public), then a standard water extinguisher without additive can be fitted.
